A delightful set of this scarce and beautifully printed edition of the works of Metastasio, poet and librettist, considered the most important writer of opera seria libretti. Metastasio’s poetry is romantic and lyrical, with an emotional force never far below the surface. ‘Language in Metastasio's hands is musical, lucid, and songlike, perhaps due to his experience as an improvisatory poet’. He was an admirer of Tasso, Guarini and Ovid. This luxurious edition of his works is prefaced by an introduction by Metastasio, signed Vienna 9th March 1754 and a lengthy essay on Metastasio’s works, ‘Dissertazione... su le Poesí Drammatiche de Sig. Abate Pietro Metastasio’ by Ranieri de Calsabigi.
